A typical session at playgroup

​8.00 - 8.40am​
  • Breakfast children choose own activities.

  • Breakfast.

8.40 am
  • School children go over to school

8.45 am/9.00am

  • Children arrive and say goodbye on the cuddle mat outside, greeted by staff.

9.00/9.15am - 9.15/9.30am (12.15 - 12.30pm)
  • Children move into the "quiet room" or "listening room" for register and news time.

  • Children are encouraged to tell their news they might have or to show items that they have brought from home 

  • An opportunity for early phonics and numbers learning, eg.: counting rhymes, counting children or adults, recognising sounds or words.

  • Time to discuss what is going to happen during the session/day - especially important if there are changes to the usual routine, or things to remember such as wearing hats on sunny days.

9.15/9.30 - 11.00am (12.30 - 2.30pm)
  • Free-play - children may choose their activities, either inside or out.

  •  Special activities - sometimes special activities are planned within this time such as Forest School, tennis, football, dance, heuristic and sensory play, small group listening and learning activities, visits in the local community such as to church or the school, or gardening or cooking activities.

  • ​ ​Snack time also takes place within this time.

9.30 - 10.00am (2.00 - 2.30pm)
  • Snack time - a healthy choice of fruit and vegetables (sometimes those the children have grown themselves) or food along with water or milk. A carbohydrate is also available during the afternoon snack time. Small groups of children share snack together while other children continue to play.

10.55am (2.30pm)
  • Tidy-up time - everyone gets involved, sorting and putting toys away; any "works in progress" can be put away to finish later.

11.00 - 11.10am (2.35 - 2.45pm)
  • ​Everyone comes together in the "quiet room" to talk about what they have done during the session, to listen to a story together and to sing songs or rhymes.

11.15 - 11.45am
  • Children staying for lunch wash their hands and get ready for and have their lunch.

  • Other children, staying for a "short" morning only go home.

​11.45 am/ 12.00 noon (3.00/3.15pm)
  • Children go home or stay for the next session - playgroup or KASC.

  • Children staying for other sessions have activities in the "quiet" room or play outside (weather dependent).

And for the children going to Forest School:​

 


​9.15/ 9.30am (12.30pm)
​Any children going to Forest School sessions leave the quiet room straight after the register has been called so that they have time to get ready to go outside.

9.45/10.00 am - 11.00 am (1.00 - 2.15pm)​
Activities at Forest School.
In appropriate weather conditions morning children may stay at Forest School for longer sessions to eat their packed lunch.

10.00/10.15 - 10.15/10.30am (1.45 - 2.00pm)​
Snack time - a healthy choice of fruit and vegetables (sometimes those the children have grown themselves) or food along with water or milk. A carbohydrate is also available during the afternoon snack time. Small groups of children share snack together while other children continue to play.​
11.00 - 11.15 am (2.15 - 2.30pm)​
Children return from Forest School and get changed, then come in to wash hands for lunch/get ready to go home
